The DivX and Xvid codecs are both derivations of the MPEG-4 codec. They have lost a bit of their importance since h.264/x.264 became a stable format, but they are still widely used.
There are many codecs around which are able to play videos encoded using the DIVX/XVID codecs. The most popular are divx, xvid (koepies build) and ffdshow.
3rd party codecs - Only install one of the codecs listed here!
DivX
Using the divx codec has prooven to give the best results for the majority of videos. But the additional applications and codecs provided by the installer deters some users.

- run the installer
- deselect the converter and the player
- finish the installation
Configuration

Xvid (Koepi)
This codec was very popular for a long time. But because this codec has problems to play videos which were created by using the divx codec, older versions of xvid or derivations of it.

Just run the downloaded installer and install the application with the default settings.

ffdshow

Some users reported that ffdshow has issues with some videos. It can cause image corruptions, and pixlated playback.

Installation
- run the installer
- in the screen where you are asked about which video and audio formats ffdshow should decode DE-SELECT everything.
- now scroll down the list and only select the DIVX3, DIVX4/5/6 and xvid codecs
- click the next button and finish the installation with using the default values in the next screens

- If you have ffdshow already present on your system then:
- go to your windows start menu
- select the Videodecoder-Configuration shortcut
- scoll the list down until you find the DIVX3 entry
- change the setting from deactivated to libavcodec
- do the same for DIVX4/5/6 and xvid
- close the Videodecoder-Configuration
